Teditorial: News That Counts

By: Teddy Locsin Jr.

You can never tell what may fall on your head. A hammer fell from an Ayala construction site on Pasay Road and slammed into the hood of my car. If the driver had gone faster, it would have smashed the windshield and blinded him. The company said I was lucky to have insurance because they would not pay for it and i was lucky the driver could only have been killed. There were complaints of human feces dropping from the site that would have been, if not deadly, disgusting. But in London last week, a man dropped out of the sky onto the sidewalk.

It was not a suicide or an accidental fall from the top of a building but clean out of the clear blue sky. Police surmise it was a man who had stowed away in the undercarriage of a plane and dropped out when it lowered its landing gear on the approach to the runway. Residents said it has happened before.

Police surmise he stowed away in Angola and while it was hoped he had frozen to death before dropping, he died of multiple injuries from hitting the ground.

This is the sort of news that should grab our attention instead of the latest initiative of government which never happens or wouldn't make a difference if it did. Such incidents evoke our compassion for those so desperate they invite death rather than live another day under their govt.

Some say compassion without action is meaningless. They are wrong. Compassion is everything, without it we would not begin to act to help our fellowmen. Christ whose birthday is coming said that if we do it for the least of men and that means those farthest from and least connected to us, then we do it for him. Merry Christmas.
