The front page photo of one newspaper shows the Edsa People Power monument. It is disproportionate and ridiculous. There is a right size and proper proportion for monumental sculpture that this one does not meet. For the real macoy look at Tolentino's Bonifacio freize.
The photo of the Edsa one monument shows brass people stiffly clasping hands, not a weapon in sight, and carries the caption: what's wrong with this revolutionary monument? No one bears arms. But the People Power revolt on Edsa triumphed over the dictator, stunning the world. Not a single shot was fired.
Actually there was. A loyalist soldier, perched in the cross beams of a TV tower, was shot and hung upside down while his life's blood fell from a great height to the Earth.
Cory Aquino would have recognized his sacrifice. When I recommended Colonel Biazon for promotion to one star general over the objection of FVR, I was embarrassed when Biazon told Cory in his interview 'before you consider me, you should know I was loyal to my Commander in Chief, President Marcos, to the end.'
Very cooly, she said, I would not want it any other way. I expect the same loyalty from you to this Commander in Chief. Cory could separate virtue from circumstance, courage from the side where it is displayed even, as Pascal said, if it happens to be on the other side of the river. Because courage has its own fatherland of which all are citizens, Cory and that soldier and the noble dead that stood on either side of the great divide at Edsa. The soldier in the tower was where he was supposed to be, where obedience had posted him and where he stuck it out until a bullet knocked him off ending his tour of duty. No fitter time to recall this unknown soldier than on the anniversary of our freedom and his last tribute to the soldier's oath: My honor is obedience. I do not recall the day he was shot. It may have even been after Edsa and all was lost for his cause but honor, as Ninoy loved to quote the French after their defeat at Dien Bien Phu.
And I do not know his name. But I am certain of his glory. Good night and good luck.
