Teditorial: Less Choices, More Money

Is Comelec saying it does not want voters to go over a long list of more choices instead of a shorter list dictated by the Comelec?

By: Teddy Locsin Jr.

Singer Victor Wood would not be able to run for the Senate for the second time Yahoo News reports. Wood would not? would? Will, will, will. If internet news can't even get that right, it will never replace mainstream media.

Anyway, the Comelec disqualified Wood for and I quote "failing to prove his capability to buy an election by launching a massive nationwide campaign if he runs in the 2013 senatorial race." Also, he is running independent and not with a party.

Quiet possibly all this is in a law. If it is, the law is unconstitutional. It imposes a property qualification on elective posts by requiring a candidate to show he can buy an election. Or it compels him to join a party of people he finds repugnant. Victor Wood has never stolen a cent of public funds.

Victor Wood is not a nobody. Of course he was a singer and an actor like Joseph Estrada who ran for mayor, senator, vice president, president and now for mayor again. Wood was a famous singer and a known actor. If money is needed for voter recognition, he has that already and he did it by getting himself known for a real body of work pretty much like Erap and FPJ.

So why disqualify him? The Comelec is sending a signal that unless you go along with the majority and the minority that totally agrees with the majority, you are not entitled to try running for elective office. It is saying that being able to buy an election is a prerequisite to winning one. Do you have to guarantee that you can buy a victory before you can be allowed to run?

But how do you guarantee victory? In the last administration, it was to call Garci. And now who do you call? Is Comelec saying it does not want voters to go over a long list of more choices instead of a shorter list dictated by the Comelec? I am asking if no one else is smart enough to join me in that request.

Keep well.
