Secretary Lacierda explained it well. The Noynoy administration is not against the Freedom of Information Act it promised in the campaign. It wants still wants it, just not for this administration but for the next one which is sure to be crooked. Why pass the FOI now, says Lacierda, when it is not yet needed. Let the dishonest future take care of itself and cross that bridge when we get to it. It is the next crooked government that should push for an FOI law to stop itself from stealing, goes the logic.

Since this govt says it is transparent there is no reason for a law to compel it to be transparent. That would be admitting it is not transparent. And since this admin says it is clean, there is no need for a law to make it come clean. If it pushed for such a law it would be an admission it is still dirty. An FOI is therefore not needed now. Lacierda said that should satisfy those who still insist on a useless foi in an administration that claims to be hiding nothing.

But the best way to show you are hiding nothing is not by showing the public only what you want to show it or what you think it deserves to know and nothing else, but to let the public see everything it wants to see and let the public decide what it wants to know, what it needs to know and what it wants to see. But what if the public cannot handle the truth, as Jack Nicholson said in A Few Good Men?

However, the best way to ensure that the next dishonest admin will not be able to hide its shenanigans is for this admin that claims to be honest and transparent to pass a Freedom of Information Act, while such a law can still be passed by those who say they are not afraid of the truth and are hiding nothing. Only such an admin can pass such a law because the next dishonest admin certainly will not do it.

Noynoy said never again the hidden dishonesty of the past because everything will be out in the open. Well there is no better time to start than now. Only the honest will pass laws promoting honesty, only the dishonest will not do it and say the country must wait for a crooked gov't to pass an honest law.
